i looked at the hsc honour roll for a few schools and noticed that everyone who got b6s in mx2 and mx1 don't get one in maths advanced.. which is weird cus obviously they would get one right?? but does that mean they either already sat the exam in like y11 or am i missing something

Because people doing mx2 don't officially do maths advanced. They sit in the maths advanced classes and learn it, but are not tested on it. Instead, they recieve two units counted for mx1, two units counted for mx2, and no units counted for advanced. Hope that clarifies.

The advanced maths and extn 2 papers are quite often timetabled to occur simultaneously, so that it is impossible to sit both in the same year. Accelerated students can, however, sit the adv maths paper in more junior years, so they can get a band 6 in adv maths and E4 in both MX1 and MX2 (as my son did) but as soon as they sit the MX2 exam, the MX2 score will replace the adv maths score for ATAR calculation, even if the MX2 score produces a worse ATAR.

In some schools, they do the trial exams and all the assessments for all three and can decide right at the end of the year whether they want to sit the adv maths or Extn 2 HSC exam (as my elder daughter was given the choice to do). Since she was ranked 1 in adv maths, MX1 and MX2 and her then boyfriend (now my SIL) was ranked 2 in all three, by her choosing to do MX2 and him choosing to do Adv maths, they both got ranked first for everything because the MX1 cohort which does MX2 and the MX1 cohort that only does adv maths are separately ranked, so both could rank first in MX1, as well as rank first respectively in adv maths & MX2 (which was a nice little bit of game optimisation between them).

To specifically answer your question, they can sit the HSC adv maths in Yr 11 or earlier (in my son’s case, Yr 9), but as Hazzrat responded, it is optional, and many don’t officially sit the exam at all. It is good practice though, to sit an HSC exam under zero pressure, knowing that the mark will eventually be replaced by the MX2 mark.

They can't split the unit up? Like how if you take an extension and it counts towards your best ten they split your next best in half or whatever? (I'm still a little fuzzy on that, too 🥲)

They do split units the way you’ve described, but they don’t do so with three levels of maths. I don’t know the reason - perhaps they think it gives some an advantage, but it would also encourage more students to take more challenging levels of study.

Edited: The above (that extn 2 mark will always replace the 2u mark) only applies to maths. For English, the best two units at any level will always count and then the other units are compared to marks for other subjects and counted if they are in the top ten units (https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/atar/how-your-atar-is-calculated).

I always laugh cause tbh a lot of mx2 kids would get 0 in a lot of advanced only topics 🤣
like my friends ask me to help with some mx2 questions and I can solve them pretty quickly but I remember spending a whole free period trying to help my friend solve an advanced multi choice on functions

Also if your mx2 mark produces a lower atar than ur adv mark u are intellectually disabled. You genuinely had to get 10/100 in the final exam for that to be possible

if you didn't get a band 6 in math advanced, you shouldn't be doing mx2 to begin with.

a 90 band 6 is advanced is equivalent to a 70 in math extension 2 (a band 4) which is a 40/100 in the final hsc exam

bruh not all schools offer accel science and eng
they really should. mx2 and mx1 is built upon everything done in high school. Meanwhile the content in hsc science or english doesn't require any actual prerequisites. Math needs previous experience to be good at, so it should be done last. It would be better if the science and english could get out of the way to focus on math instead

it's called a compressed curriculum in the school im at, everyone does it. 3 subjects for year 11 and 3 subjects for year 12. Who in their right mind would rather do 6 all at the end?

It actually provides an advantage compared to other schools who do 6 subjects a year. No need to focus on bs like english when i want to do math. Sadly I still have to do shitty chem
