Im not against ppl doing math but straightout tho whats the point if hes struggling to understand the content? if the problem are his marks then whatever sure he can pull up, but if the problem is w him not understanding the context then thats the issue
Like for example someone who is getting 60s in math due to silly mistakes but understands what theyre doing is VERY different for someone who is getting 60s and doesnt understand what theyre doing
Also im giving this advice not bc im a hater but bc i saw them irl, my friends who struggled in yr 10 math continued to struggle in yr 11 adv

Percentage does not reflect understanding... 1. and 2. if you struggle at something r u seriously implying that the best option is to give up on the subject entirely? Your friend's are a set minority, and you generalized that to all people who struggle. Most of the students in ranks 1-10 in my school for ext 2 struggled with content to at least some extent when they were in their junior years- of which now after accelerating last year have received 96+ ext1 scores-> predicted similar results for ext 2. If you believe that you yourself have not struggled with any of the content before, you are most definitely delusional. Yr 10 math will not be a predictor for future success simply because there is 2 years worth of preparation for the hsc, 2yrs by which one can identify their weaknesses and combat them. You should not be making such bold claims simply because you found it easy. Just as there are people who screwed their yr 11 adv marks (similar to your friends) who struggled in yr 10, there will be students that excel in yr 10 and struggle in yr11. Just because someone receives a bad result should not warrant you to encourage them to completely drop the subject.

I'm veryyyyy late to this but honestly
Your marks, since you're a ruse kid (no offence), probably aren't the most accurate representation of how you would perform in a maths HSC
And it's hard to know where you sit compared to the rest of the state in Year 10

Firstly ik this wasn't ur initial question but I would still try to do at least adv math in your situation, 60% isn't terrible, I don't know exacts but I'm 90% sure there are ppl in my school take adv from not great marks (and I don't go to a top 5 school either so)
I also assume your current study schedule isn't what it would be in year 11 and 12, so there's always the chance that you just need the time and effort - and maybe a change in content (I know that if I took standard, I wouldn't understand half of what's happening - like what on earth is a network my friend tried to explain it to me)
And worst comes to worst you can just drop in year 12 yippee

Anyways, about tutoring
I would recommend seeing if you have any friends in older grades and if they'd be willing to help you at like lunchtimes or smth (or pay somebody who's graduated)
They're more likely to understand your school culture, the way your teachers teach in case something confused you, and also having a friend help is just better than some rando imo
Tutoring also doesn't work for everyone - there are plenty of kids who do well in my school w/ tutoring but also just as many who do well without, I would recommend private over group bc group just makes ppl learn content earlier (from what I've heard) whereas 1 on 1 can help you directly with specific topics

And my final advice, when ur studying
Don't hyperfixate on super hard questions - dropping those marks is better than dropping easy ones bc those questions are designed for maths genius if ykwim
Try and solidify the basics and remove any and all silly mistakes by slowly but surely practicing
Idk if this exists for year 10 but like I would look at the prospective band range for a question - if somebody is low band 5, imo its better for them to focus on getting all the band 5 qs right instead of a band 6 one here and there

Oh and attempt every question!! Just writing a formula could get you a sneaky mark

Anyways my year 10 environment was super diff so hopefully some of that was relevant
You can do this!

How did you go with your half yearly exams?

Did you want to post questions you did not successfully answer to see if members of this forum can help you close the gaps in your understanding? Do you also want to post questions from past exams for closing gaps in other math topics?
