okay so basically i dont know what to do. Should i take extension 2 english and extension 2 math, because thats the only 2 subjects im actually good at. But its not even like top 10 in my cohort. For math im 13th and for english im 22nd. Im trying to improve but im not going to beat those smart smart kids yk. So like do i do it and be burnt out or what. Cause i will also have to take extension 1 and advanced hsc papers on top of extension 2 but it will give me alot of time to work on just 3 subjects so idk. HELP PLS THANKS SO MUCH!! or like should i only do one but i dont even know which one cause this one teacher said to do mathematics extension 2 you have to love it AND I DONT I DONT LOVE ANYTHING IN SCHOOL but like ugh. And my parents want me to get like a 99 atar too. Anyways lmk thanks so much!!

Lmao heres a tip baby:
u never think of doing an ext 2 subject till u get rlly good in ext 1 preliminary (80%+) bc:
1. U might beat urself if u dont get into ext 2 courses
2. ext 2 subjects ARE ONLY yr 12 (i realised that no one knows this from jnr yrs)
3. Its not necessary for a 99 ATAR
4. Why dont u try to improve rn in yr 10 (get top 10 in both math and eng) before deciding
5. Throughout ur yr 10 u might realise u dont even want to do ext subjects

also what school do u go to? Selective, public, private, catholic etc and ur school rank

It's fine u have plenty of time to improve ur marks and decide cause ext 2 is only for year 12's. U can think of this like end of next year

Also if u r 100% sure u do want to do ext 2, remember:
since ext 2 math is about 4 units that means 40% of ur time is just doing math nonstop (ask whoever u want)
and ext 2 eng is ext 2 eng, ext 1 eng and adv eng so r u able to balance studying 2 english subjects and writing a story?
also remember that u still have one more subject (4+4=8 units not enough for atar) so r u up for the challenge?

Depends on how many units ur on… you need 4 unique subjects so that‘s at least 12 units (I think?). I dropped chem today after being on 13 units for the whole of Year 12 so far, there was not really enough time for everything to be done thoroughly. I think it‘s best to choose the subject you perform best in for ext2, not saying that both cannot be done but it’s a pretty heavy commitment. I considered doing it for a while too, but i decided against it in the end. You gotta be able to enjoy Year 12 a little too :spin:

AWHH THANKS SO MUCH GUYS ILY ALL U GUYS ARE SO SWEET! okay so i think im going to put down extension 2 for both right now cause i go to a public school who are adding rules that only the top 20 get to do maths extension 2 and anyone whose getting above 75% can do english extension but they have to ask. SO im thinking i put those down but have back ups just in case and then if I cant do it in year 12 i drop it. Cause in year 11 it will just be just the advanced work. Surely that will work right?

ext 2 eng is prob not what u think, but if u abs love eng do it - and by that i mean be prepared to read read read, research up to hundreds of journals and research platforms on your topic (eg psycology, form, and history), and have written 10+ 8k word story drafts with the hopes of reaching over 45/50 in your time of juggling other subjects.

im lit here, stuffing down dinner in one hand, typing a draft that should've been done last month with the other, all in the middle of a zoom class meeting, and answering a q on BoS (not even kidding) at 8pm, but since i lve eng its enjoyable. dont be fooled tho its not easy.

wait but aren't u in year 10. U can't pick ext 2 until year 12. If u want to ext 2 u have to do adv and ext 1 in year 11

Imo yeah you'll have less different subjects to work on but doesn't mean your workload is necessarily going to be less since you'll still be doing 10 units unless you accel smthing
As for whether you want to do them in yr 12 I'd say depends on if ur happy w ur prelim subjects/ can get better in doing those

Sorry I just saw this, but to contribute my two cents: I literally signed up for both ext 2 math and ext 2 english, but ultimately decided it wasn't worth the effort (didn't even make it to the first lesson of ext 2 eng, haha). Devoting 80% of your time to english and math can be really draining. That being said, someone in my school did do both and carried through 12 units to the HSC, and I think they did pretty well from what I heard. Additionally, what you consider for eng ext versus math ext are different. Math ext 2 is just harder math, whereas eng ext 2 is rather more english, not necessarily harder. Having a major work on top of 4U math may be a big time sink though. I ended up dropping eng ext 1 as well just because of how much work it was for me, and though I miss it (I HATE ENG ADV) that was ultimately the best decision.

Also, something not many people know - if you do 4U math, you don't sit the advanced math HSC! For math, I feel like there's a lot of psychological weight - I know people who'd do decently well in 4U, but the psychological pressure of constantly getting 60s-70s (or even failing) when normally you're a top student can be really hard to work through. Just some things to think about!

And don't stress if you can't beat the smart-smart kids. Know your capabilities. No matter how smart a cohort is, someone will end up being in the lower quartile, because that's just how it works.

If you're gonna do both extensions, I'd recommend ensuring you have at least one 'extra' subject that you really enjoy, just so you don't get burnt out with all the english and maths. If you have any questions about other subjects then the people on this forum will always be here to help!

Tell us what you decide 😄
