@coolcat6778 you’ll love this thread
I’ll go first. The ranking system is so dumb cause why can’t we just get the marks that we get in our exams. And it just creates unnecessary competition and pressure. Also the scaling and moderation. Like just let us all do the same exams and make them all scale the same way like A levels or smth

I'll get started on it then :D

English Adv is absolutely ludicrous. The requirements are so rigid and you're given so little time to write that it's no longer about understanding or skill, it's about writing speed and memorisation. Speaking of memorisation, you just need to prepare heavily edited and dense essays and rote learn quotes, but you don't even need to be good at English for that. You can literally get someone else to write it for you, or steal a state ranker's essay (as has been suggested on here), then memorise it. Yeah yeah, you need to adapt the essay, but once you've done a lot of practice (gruelling, monotonous practice btw) with a lot of essay questions, you'll be fine. And the hand cramps...

The short answer section and mod C are the only sections where you actually need to develop English skills (maybe not even mod C). Except, the way you're meant to answer SAQs is so rigid too, what with the number of quotes and techniques you need to talk about. When did analysis involve picking out every single technique that the author has used and fabricating a seemingly sophisticated thesis/topic sentence that is really just a combination of syllabus buzzwords?

Thanks

And also why is NESA still stuck in the 20th century. Like make the hsc online already . And the worst part is that science ext is already online and apparently their gonna make Eng ext 1 online too so why don’t they make all the other exams online. Even NAPLAN is online. It’s like they purposely want to destroy the environment with how much paper they use

And also the fact that math isn’t compulsory and English is. And even if math was compulsory I bet they wouldn’t make it count towards our atar. Like all the math haters can ditch math but us English haters can’t 😭. Like if NESA wants to make things fair then make math compulsory and make it count toward people’s atar

Also there’s so many other ways we can learn critical thinking skills if that’s the reason why it’s mandatory. Like making us overanalyse stupid stuff in literature isn’t gonna help us and it’s gonna just make us hate everything associated with our own language. Like at least choose different topics or smth to analyse and not smth like the symbolism of a colour or some shit. Like why don’t we ever look at non fiction texts in English and deduce meaning and stuff related to our society instead of made up stories. Also English teachers are always like there’s always a reason that an author wrote this, used the colour red or smth in a film, but like what if they just like the colour lmao. Like I bet a film director would not be making their film so that there’s a shit ton of techniques for an English class to analyse. Like what if the way they edited it just looks good and succinct. Well if I was a film director that would be my priority

Like the other day we were looking at short clips in the editing of the film and I was like what if the film editors just got lazy or they were pressed for time and didn’t have time to create long shots. I lowkey wish English was more about philosophical topics about existentialism or some other societal issues cause that would be more interesting and useful and we would still have to think critically

Also why do we have to memorise quotes for English. Like in math, physics, chem we get a formula sheet so that we don’t have to waste our brain space tomemorise formulas so why can’t we get the same for English. Like imagine telling a chem student to memorise the whole fricking periodic table and the atomic mass, number of protons, etc for each element. Like why can’t we all submit a quote sheet a few weeks before an exam and then give it to us on the day. Like isn’t English about writing and critically analysing, not memorising and if it is about memorisation then what’s the point of the subject

paper is still the best for math and physics and chem

Bro lowkey you need to stop complaining and get up and study like wtf
maybe if u did put a decent amount in ur studying instead of complaining all the time here ull see why the system is built like that
besides u deadass think a 90% in visual arts is the same as a 90% in physics? Someone who spent a lot of their years practicing arts is not the same as someone who studied physics so stop complaining at the ranking system
if anything i think its fair, if u cant put in a decent amount of studying and lock in to get a good rank and not be affected by scaling thats on u

get ur ass up and study n stop taking the piss omg

And also for me ranting is just as important as studying cause I need some sort of way to let out my frustrations. Cause if I keep it bottled up my wellbeing is gonna suffer even more. What's the point of studying if I'm still gonna feel frustrated inside. Also the thing that pisses me off is when people tell me off for complaining but like I'm not asking for answers I just want to rant and let my frustrations out. Like let a girl rant plz. If it bothers u then just ignore it. I also like it when people complain about certain topics cause it's interesting to see other's pov and how they see things. I wish we did more debating stuff in English. And I get how there are always reasons why systems like the hsc are built a certain way, but I just like sharing my views
