The US still has a lot going for it that is the sad thing. If only they could address inequality better - but it is such a hyper-individualistic society that I dont know if they can. All empires eventually decline and I sense that inequality could be at the heart of their downfall.

there's no fixing inequality. You talk about it as if its simple as introducing a particular policy, but it isn't. And inequality has existed in the US for as long as the country has been existed. It's not going to cause a downfall.

It's also funny how the people who talk the most about inequality want america to continue being flooded with dirt poor low human capital third world migrants and telling everyone that america "needs" the "cheap labor"

So basically, cry about inequality one minute, advocate for increased inequality the next (in the form of millions of poor people moving to the country)

Government changes and Machinery of Government changes are always tough to manage (and costly), but at least in Australia both sides dont have a gapping chasm between them. A lot of policy generally stays consistent.

Add to this political polarisation. Obviously, there is a lot of talk about the impact on polarisation on public discourse and policy. However, the real big hidden impact relates to the proper administration of government. Huge amounts of polarisation make it very difficult for a civil service to deliver strong policy and services. Let's say the EPA for example, one minute you have a government who strongly supports environmental initiatives and climate change efforts and the next you have one who is the complete opposite. The EPA have to suddenly and rapidly change course with a new government which is very difficult when you have established staff and structures.

That is true. Our two main parties are more left-centre and right-centre parties, but in America there really isn't a centrist party.

It's like if our major parties were One Nation and the Greens. From a public policy/administration perspective, if we had that setup each change of government would be a nightmare. The amount of public funds that would need to be wasted to completely shift almost all priorities and work would be insane. Dont recommend/10.

It's almost as if balance and compromise is a bad thing. Nothing wrong with diversity of thought, where it becomes problematic is when people arent willing to compromise.

From a governing perspective, taking extreme positions can actually hurt attempts at reform, because once the other side gets in they will immediately reverse course. The reforms that last are born from compromise or taking reasonable positions.
