like scroll all the way to the bottom of the marking criteria and there is a mapping grid which tells you what questions are from what topics and you'll see that some of them are yr 11 topics

Tbh you can skip the first bunch of steps as it's all just for show
Its easy enough to get to the conclusion of the sum of upper and lower rectangles then only thing is sub into the given formula and prove it. And lmao we aren't ever getting a question like that its out of scope even in 3u and 4u until next year but its fun so I can't argue
well it looks nice so i dont mind the extra working haha
also damn its not even in the scope?? at least it was really fun to learn 😂

i only recognise the (1+1/n)^n formula because thats one way to express e if u let n approach infinity

It's actually easier than the last one it just looks way more cooked. Only thing is that I came across some algebraic manipulation i've never seen before but other than that it was ok.

after staring at this for a while, i think i finally get the part where you deal with each inequality separately

for both inequalities, we're trying to isolate e right? hence why we do the root thing to get e by itself. the confusing bit is why do we not do the same operation on the rhs? why do we raise it to the power of n+1 instead?
thats because when it comes to inequalities, as long as the inequality holds its still valid, so we dont necessarily need to do the same operation on each side
thats why they tell us that n is positive- if u raise anything >1 (which e and 1+1/n must be) to the power of n, as long as n is positive, that will be greater than if you rooted something to n.
in other words-
a^n>n√a given n>1 (if that makes sense)
this is also true for n+1

so conveniently, by raising one side to the power of n or n+1 and rooting the other side by n or n+1, we isolate e whilst getting what the question wants us to prove by getting out (1+1/n)^n or n+1 and the inequality holds

then after doing that we get e in both inequalities and we can make a sandwich inequality (as my ext 2 teacher calls them 😂 ) and boom!

yes so why are we doing the opposite operation instead? Is it because as we take away the power the change is so drastic that the inequality cannot be valid unless the opposite is done to the other side?
but the thing ab inequalities is that all that matters is that one thing is bigger than the other thing, no matter how much bigger the thing is yk? unlike equalities where everything has to be perfectly equal to each other

doing the opposite operation still lets the inequality hold, and it gets out the term the question needs us to get so it doesnt matter the operation we do.
take for example like idk
x>y

the inequality still holds if we change it to like

x+1>y

even tho technically the LHS is larger than before, the inequality is still true and we didnt need to necessarily do the same operation on both sides.
actually im not too sure if this is valid bc ive never done anything of the likes while dealing with inequalities but it seems ok to me, as long as we get what the question wants right? 🤷‍♀️

I'll be ready for anything this time I cannot fail
the exam is only 3 hours long, and if they waste some of that precious time by testing some algebraic manipulation skills you found in a question in 2002, theyd just be trying to set everyone up for mystery marks 😂
id say its a good thing you got exposure to it but dont worry about mastering it unless you somehow run into a problem that needs this kind of technique again

to be honest id be very surprised if you got anything that'd expect you to do stuff like that again in advanced.
besides the question was from 2002 right? probably had a very different scope back then
u never know, since it's the last year of this syllabus they'll throw the hardest questions ever.
