I completed Mathematics Advanced and Extension 1 in Year 11 and am now in Year 12 studying Extension 2. I achieved 99/100 in Advanced and 46/50 in Extension 1. I now need to decide whether to repeat Extension 1.

During my Extension 1 exam, I experienced significant stress and self-doubt, which negatively affected my performance. In contrast, I felt much calmer during the Advanced exam and performed far better. Having now gone through the experience, I believe I would be better equipped to manage exam pressure if I repeated Extension 1.

However, repeating would take time away from my other subjects, 2 hours of class time per week, plus around an hour of independent study. My teachers and I are confident that I would achieve a higher mark if I repeated, as I performed worse than expected, but the overall ATAR impact seems small. Based on estimates, my Extension 1 mark might increase from roughly a 99.1 to around a 99.7-99.8 ATAR contribution, which may only improve my overall ATAR by about 0.1–0.2.

Is there any point in not repeating, as I am quite certain I can score higher so I may as well sit the exam again.

Btw, Extension 1 will count as 2 units towards my ATAR. My goal is to achieve a 99+ ATAR. For context, I am hoping to gain entry to medicine at Monash through the Dean’s Rural List. They are unclear about the ATAR requirements, so I am not sure what I need. Based on ATAR calculators and expected HSC marks (noting their limitations), I am currently expecting a high 98 or low 99.

Given the time commitment versus the relatively small ATAR gain, would repeating Extension 1 be worthwhile?

If it doesn't affect your ATAR by a significant amount, don't bother repeating ext. 1 maths. It will be an extra stress so don't unnecessarily stress out.

dare I say if you're doing 4u, just repeat 3u. 4u will be most of the work anyway. just don't neglect 3u throughout the year

the increase in scaling realistically won't do much to your atar compared to doing better in your other subjects tho. keep that in mind ig

People with 95.95 received offers this year with DRL. No need to stress.

From the amazing responses here and from teachers and other advice, I think I won't repeat. The time will be better spent on other subjects, and doing better on other subjects, especially english will impact the final ATAR more.
