is it okay to write past the lines? Obviously not outside the scanning lines indicated by the corners but I mean like if they have 5 dotted lines for a short answer and I extend past this (but not past what is scanned) would that be bad? I understand that I can use extra paper or paper at the back of the exam but I don't care I just want to know about writing extra on the question.

Probably if you ask your teacher. I know definitely for English, not sure for other subjects. But might be diff for your school so best to ask. Not fully sure for HSC tho

I wrote past the lines for modern and ancient history. Do they scan the whole page? I forgot to continue my answer in another writing booklet and just kept on writing. My answers stayed within the scanning lines.

You should be fine, for trials and prelims I wrote around 3-4 sentences beyond the line and still got marked for the,, full marks btw for those questions

everything is scanned, except the centre grey area that says "Do not write in this area". That's because they cut the centre of multisheet booklets to scan them more efficiently

For the 3 page writing booklets (1 a4 paper) the entire paper is scanned, even the centre, that's why the "do not write in this area" marking is not present. They scan the whole a3 sheet.

Hence you can write anywhere, except the grey area if it's present.

The black squares on the corner of the writing space is there to align the scanner, but you can write beyond them because the scanner is still capturing the whole page except the grey area
