Hey everyone, I'm in year 11 rn and I currently do eng standard, maths advanced, eco, bio, legal and business. I originally did physics at the start of the year but switched it for legal and recently dropped ext 1 maths. I am not sure if I did the right thing by not choosing eng adv, chem, physics and dropping ext 1. I know all those subjects are extremely hard and I know the struggle that comes with them. I can't help but feel as though I'm stupid for not choosing them/dropping them? The thing is I like all my subjects and even though my marks for math, eco and legal aren't the best, I'm just worried that I'm not doing enough work like all the 4 unit math kids or idk 3 unit eng kids. I like taking my time and sometimes I'm slow because of it, and don't like having too many expectations placed on me. I guess a part of me just feels a bit sad? or disappointed for not doing the subjects that would require harder work because I know I would've done if it I really wanted to. I want to know if anyone else feels that way and if I am still able to do some stem degrees/ go into pathways without taking physics/chem. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure you even if the course you're looking is like a chem based course simply on the basis that most uni offer courses that let's you catch up/ learn the content you aren't familiar with. Additionally, most unis actually don't have subject prerequisites and only recommendations.

The HSC is not the end of the world...the system creates a tier-hierarchy mindset in students, that ultimately means standard English for example is viewed as lower than English advanced. As anyone will tell you, English standard is very difficult, and not much easier than advanced.

The syllabus was designed as a one-size fits all. Certainly, you can take a bridging course at the university or TAFE, and then have knowledge that prepares you for the degree. If your school has Atomi or Edrolo, maybe ask your teacher if they can add you to the physics course, or borrow a textbook to gain understanding of the concepts.

i think for most courses the sciences are recommended courses not prerequisites, only really math and english are most of the time, and even so theres a lot of bridging course u can take to fill the knowledge gaps. also usyd recently got rid of math prereqs for a lot of their courses, it could continue to be a trend w other subjects and unis too

Yeah as other ppl have said, not a lot of unis have subject prerequisites anymore so you definitely should still be able to go into stem degrees or pathways with your subjects.

I think that ultimately you should choose the subjects that are best for you aka the ones you like bc you'll actually be motivated to study for them and probably get better marks for them without it being actual torture to go through. To me assigning value to certain subjects is kind of pointless bc different ppl are more geared to diff subjects, and what's most important is that the subjects are good for you. Esp bc you said you don't rlly like expectations and that you like taking your time, I would worry abt your stress levels if you had kept/chosen all of those subjects. Like your wellbeing is most important bc if you hate most of your subjects and you're absolutely going through it, you probably won't be able to perform the best you can. I don't think choosing the subjects you did makes you stupid, because I don't think doing certain subjects makes a person particularly smart (and even if it does, it doesn't guarantee they have anything else going for them). Those subjects might feel like what would be the right track superficially, but taking them and then doing badly would only hinder your overall performance. Instead of comparing yourself to other ppl/focusing on hypotheticals, I think you should remind yourself that the choices you made are in the past now and there's not much you can change, but also that you made the decisions you thought would be best for you at the time and you should just focus on making the most out of them right now. :>
