I'm having a bit of a crashout regarding the fact that english has to count to my ATAR tbh (and it's honestly my worst subject, I also dislike it so much eng ext was so much better)

ik there's the raw marks website but it's a little outdated/unspecific and ngl its mostly for marks around the like 85-90 range, when my goal is a bit higher if I wanna match my other subjects
I just need someone to drill into my head what kind of marks a 95 HSC mark would require, like do I need to be getting 19/20 on every essay? roughly how many marks can I afford to be dropping? what does a raw 90% usually translate to?

sorry if this is a stupid question I just need someone to dumb it down for me

thanks guys!

WHOA THERE, you need a 95 to match your other subjects? Crazyyy

English Adv is the kind of subject that is ridiculously hard to get a high band 6 in. I'm pretty sure some state rankers only get a 97 (maybe 98? I don't remember that well) as their HSC mark. The lower band 6 marks are a lot easier to get. If you're aiming high, maybe a 93-94 might be more realistic?

If you're talking about your internal marks, you're focusing more on ranks than individual essay marks, because each school has different marking standards and exam difficulties. For external marks, I doubt that a 90 raw will align to a 95, maybe around a 93? I'm not too sure

I'm not saying that you shouldn't aim high because it sounds like you're a very high achiever, but I'm sure you can still do extremely well if you get a lower band 6 in English and a high band 6 in all your other subjects

sorry I wasn't trying to brag I'm just having a moment here haha
it's just a bit frustrating knowing it's likely english will be my worst subject but still have to count

thank you for your lovely and eloquent reply! yeah I really have no clue how my school marks, I do know we achieve those 93-94s quite consistently I think though so that makes a lot of sense, the 95 is a lot rarer
some teachers claim to be HSC markers but uh...one of them is a little questionable...

idk a 95 feels a lot more common in other subjects if ykwim? I don't know I feel like I hear about maths ones a lot (like on the media or here), and like SOR and music so I assumed it was decently common in Eng too

yeah a 90 aligning to a 93~ makes a lot of sense, thanks :) (also guys how can you make the smiley face be a normal punctuation instead of the emoji)

Haha yeah it's ok, English was my main worry until recently, when bio surpassed it as my worst subject :uhoh: o_O, so I also considered your question back then. Fun fact, I just had my English exam today, so that's why I'm so relaxed lmaoo

Frustration is English in a nutshell tbh :blink2:

Yeah my school is very strong in English, but usually 93-94 is the standard for higher rankers. If you're topping the grade, you might get 95-96. One of my teachers is also a questionable HSC marker so dw...

That's true. It's much easier to get high band 6s in other subjects particularly maths, but English Adv just generally doesn't scale very well, and it's hard to score very high even if you're good at the subject

(I can't answer you about the smiley face cause I'm basically tech-illiterate)

heyyyyy congrats on finishing ur eng exam lol I'm sure you did awesome (and I also believe in pulling bio back up!!) :hug2:

my rank for eng is so questionable rn

not great teachers suck...I don't like blaming them for my shortcomings but boy do I come close sometimes when it feels like they could so easily be doing better

and honestly it sucks about the scaling, though I guess all that matters is ATAR contribution so ultimately the HSC mark doesn't mean much

ARGHHHH ENGLISH
