Hi,

I'm in year 11 doing the following subjects: 3u Eng, 3u math, Italian continuers, health and movement science, sor 1, and physics. In year 12, I plan to do 4u math, 3u eng, Italian continuers, health and movement science, and sor 1. Therefore, I will be dropping physics at the end of year 11, which a decent amount of other physics students will do doing. Should I still study for the year 11 physics prelim exam after I am 100% sure I'm dropping it? Are there any consequences in terms of uni/ATAR from doing poorly in the physics prelim as long as I do well in other subjects? Btw I only need a 52% in this prelim to keep at least a B in physics for this year, which I am fine with, and I'm definitely not gonna get first in course either, so that's out of the question. Any advice would be appreciated.

omg same!
im thinking of doing 4u math and dropping physics (and chem), i wanna do: 4u math, eng adv, bio and eco
for me im still gonna study for my physics perlim tho im not gonna put in as much effort like my other subjects especially since the teacher wants us to self study module 4 (which most of the class did in tutoring–i dont go tutoring) and we're still halfway through module 3

ultimately its up to u ig if you're someone who craves academic validation or jsut want to feel good abt urself definitely put in the effort

why do people who bother doing 4u math drop or not do physics?

clearly you aren't suitable for 4u math if you're failing math heavy prelim physics. like just quit all math and just do standard instead

some people just dont enjoy physics and enjoy math instead, the physics and math syllabus (specifically in yr 11) ARE VERY different

The only time during which your year 11 results will affect you is if you decide to apply for early entry or scholarships. If you want to apply for something that is related to physics, such as engineering or the like, then a decent mark in physics may boost your chances. However, since you're dropping the subject, I'm assuming that it probably isn't very related to your strengths and career goals.

Of course, this is a very specific example. Realistically, your year 11 marks shouldn't matter that much, as they do not affect your HSC results or ATAR at all. Generally it's up to you - whether you'd be disappointed about flunking physics (as jane said), or if you'd rather dedicate the time to something else. Just make sure to still make a serious attempt for at least the majority of questions on the day of the exam, even if you don't know much content. You shouldn't get an N award either way, but do that just to be safe.

Omg you'll be doing really similar subjects to me! In fact I did the exact same subjects + the language at the beginning of yr 12, then dropped ext 2
