hi,
i am to submit my yr 12 subjects by the end of the week, and so far ive secured the following
- ext 2 maths (4u)
- physics (2u)
- drama (2u)
--------------
basically im struggling between keeping ext 1 eng (which i am currently doing in yr 11 rn) or to drop to advanced eng. im not really an english student, maths is more my best, but the problem is, is that if i do advanced english, i will only have 10 units in yr 12 (im worried as this means all my units will go towards my atar) or if i should keep ext eng (i really cant write essays, like i barely even touch a book to read) which gives me 11 units as my total, but idk how 11 units will be calculated for my atar. so if anyone could help me out on the difference between advacned eng and ext, and how 11 units are calculated, that would be great, thanks

I used to do eng ext so I can actually contribute woohoo!

Firstly, when it's calculated, if eng ext is in your top 10 units, then your bottom two unit subject is 'halved' (so instead of a mark out of 100 counting towards your ATAR, it'll be a mark of 50) before ATAR calculation

If I were you I would drop eng ext however idk if this is a thing in ur school but in mine extensions you pick up in year 12 cannot count towards your 10 units (i.e. eng ext 2, math ext 2, history ext, sci ext, music ext) so check if this is a thing
Textiles is in ur signature so are you planning on dropping that?

Anyways why I would drop:
- it seems like you're not tossing between this or that to drop but whether to drop eng ext or not - seeing as you don't seem to enjoy it that much, you're not gonna want to put in the effort that eng ext kind of requires (it's really heavy for a 1U subject)
- from what I can tell, it's not one of your best subjects; if it's not likely to count to your ATAR, just drop it, having 'safety units' does help but I feel like eng ext is not one of those subjects that works well as a safety unit for the amount of work you have to put into it

This is just my opinion and I'm biased bc I ended up dropping, I did enjoy it a whole lot more than adv tho ngl

I also did English extension and dropped! I know a lot of people who say that ext is much more enjoyable than adv because the content is more meaningful and interesting. You also have a lot more room for personal and artistic expression, if you enjoy writing. However, I think that only applies to people who actually like doing English. If you're not accustomed to reading lots, ext English probably isn't the way to go
