To all students out there,

I hear you are suffering. I understand you think that the system is rigged against you, which is partially true. The facts are that socio-economic privilege does buy better education, which results in better life outcomes. This is a fact. However, I think we should step away from the small things and look at the big picture. The big picture is that: Sydney is dying as a country. It is dying because nobody wishes to have kids anymore. And, when you step away and wonder why, it is because Sydney is an expensive city.

And, change starts from kids. Kids are the future of Australia, and hence must encompass Australian values. So, perhaps it is finally time for stricter regulations such that the tutoring culture that has caused generational trauma is disbanded.

Didn't know Sydney was a country.

Also private tutoring is not a major factor in why people no longer wish to have kids, decline in birth rate is a problem with many other developed countries. Restriction of private tutoring will not magically increase birth rate nor input "Australian Values" into the next generation.

My bad hahah, Sydney is a city. But I guess I have always considered Sydney representative of Australia. Which indicates internalised elitism hahaha.

I don't agree. I personally believe the cost of living, and how expensive it is to produce a "successful" kid is a good reason why adults wish to stop having kids.

Also, last time I checked, I am an adult and you are a kid LMFAO

I agree that the cost of living is the main reason for many adults feeling responsible for their children. On the other hand, there are more children in the low income families (just visit Western suburbs). We will have a very different Australia after one generation.

I get Marxist economic determinist vibes from this post...

True, those from higher socioeconomic backgrounds can afford tutoring AND to go to the most affluent schools in metropolitan Sydney.

BUT birth rates are not wedded to school performance. People aren't having kids due to how shit the world is (cost of living, war etc). Another controversial (and somewhat nihilistic) point you could look at this debate from is that other cultures are 'out-breeding' others in Australia, leading to a preponderance of children from CAL/D backgrounds as opposed to your 'Australian values' sort of trope.

These cultures may have the importance of education drilled into them from a young age, as their family may be from working class/migrant background that view hard work as the path of least resistance kind of thing. Cliche example here, but take the Vietnamese for example. Australia offered refuge to them post-1975 Saigon collapse, essentially giving them a new hope apart from a Diem Catholic theocratic rule or a violent communist insurgency. The importance of 'giving it your all' has obviously been passed down generations...and they may be from working class/blue collar backgrounds!

Also important to mention the laidback sort of blasé lifestyle (Anglo) Australians live. We aren't doing ourselves any favors just sitting back idly and then complaining why Australian kids are underperforming. Very interesting argument which can be argued in a multiple of ways...

The birth rate decline is also as bad in the United Kingdom, Various areas of the United States, all over Europe, the main reason for this is cost of living, the fact people are more likely to go into higher education so settle down later, changes in values, decrease in child mortality, amongst many other things. Amongst this list worries about producing a hyper nerd for a kid is probably quite low.

For your information, Last time I checked I am indeed technically an adult.
