postmodern is basically 1950s--present. think of what is in the artwork. does it use humour, appropriation (taking an older artwork and recontextualising it), does it break the boundaries of traditional art? postmodern art encompasses unconventional and new experimental ways of art.does anyone know how to tell if an artwork is modern or postmodern??![]()
in a similar sense, modern art was also experimental for its time. it seems to have followed post-industrial society--early 1950s, where movements like surrealism, abstraction and existentialism were the key ideas. this was a reaction to horrific world events like WWI, WWII, spanish flu, the great depression, industrial society, all of which subject them to a lot of changes in how they expressed art. so, art that has a really gritty and surreal way of portraying the world (in addition to being from that era) is 'modern'.
basically, look at the dates, look at how it is expressed, look at the choice of medium
